Usage Note

Abgeordnetenmandat is the formal authorisation given to a member of parliament to represent constituents. The Basic Law stipulates it is a free mandate (freies Mandat): members are responsible only to their conscience, not bound by party instructions. Loss of party membership does not automatically end the mandate.
