Usage Note
Ermittlungsverfahren is the first stage of criminal proceedings in Germany, during which the Staatsanwaltschaft and police investigate whether there is sufficient evidence to bring charges. It begins with an initial suspicion (Anfangsverdacht) and ends either with charges (Anklageerhebung) or closure (Einstellung).
