Usage Note

Karneval is the term used primarily in the Rhineland (Cologne, Düsseldorf) for the pre-Lenten carnival season. The same festival is called Fasching in Bavaria and Fastnacht in south-west Germany; all feature costumes, parades, and satirical speeches.
