Aufgelöst describes a solid that has dissolved in liquid, or a structure that has broken apart. Figuratively and very commonly, aufgelöst sein means to be distraught, dissolved in tears or distress: sie war völlig aufgelöst (she was completely beside herself). Both uses are frequent.
