Usage Note

bereits is a slightly more formal synonym of schon ('already'), common in writing and announcements. Unlike schon, it carries none of the latter's particle uses (reassurance, impatience), so it stays purely temporal.

Examples

"Der Zug ist bereits abgefahren."

Natural Translation

The train has already left.

Literal Translation

The train is already away-driven.
