deswegen

therefore

adverb DES-vay-gen Less Common

Also means

that's why

Usage Note

deswegen introduces a consequence ('for that reason') and, like deshalb, triggers verb-second word order: Es regnet, deswegen bleibe ich zu Hause. It is interchangeable with deshalb in most contexts. Do not confuse it with the question word weswegen.

Examples

"Es regnet, deswegen bleiben wir hier."

Natural Translation

It is raining, that's why we are staying here.

Literal Translation

It rains, therefore stay we here.
