geben

give

Usage Note

geben is strong, changing its stem to gibt in the third person and to gab / gegeben in the past. Its most useful idiom is the impersonal es gibt ('there is/are'), which always takes the accusative. The dative names the recipient, as in Ich gebe dir das Buch.
