stingy

adjective GYE-tsikh Less Common

Origin: from Geiz (greed, avarice)

Also means

miserly

Usage Note

geizig describes someone unwilling to spend money, more pointedly negative than sparsam (thrifty), which is a virtue. A Geizhals is a miser. Use sparsam when you mean sensible economy, geizig when you mean tight-fisted.
