Usage Note

Unerwartet simply means without having been expected or anticipated. Unerwartet auftauchen — to turn up unexpectedly. It is neutral in register and very common in spoken and written German. It differs from überraschend in that it does not imply astonishment — merely the absence of prior expectation.
