Aktie

share

noun AK-tsee-uh Less Common

Origin: from Dutch actie

Also means

stock

Usage Note

Aktie is a single share of company stock; note it is pronounced with a 'ts' and a final schwa, not like English 'action'. A company structured around shares is an Aktiengesellschaft (abbreviated AG). Beware the false friend: it has nothing to do with 'action'.

Examples

"Die Aktie ist heute gestiegen."

Natural Translation

The share rose today.

Literal Translation

The share is today risen.
