Usage Note

Erle (alder) is a deciduous tree that thrives in wet conditions along riverbanks and in marshes. The Schwarzerle (Alnus glutinosa) is the most common species in Germany. Its roots fix nitrogen, making it ecologically valuable. The Erlkönig is a famous figure in German folklore.
