Rückweg is the path or route taken to return to the starting point. Common in hiking and everyday speech: Auf dem Rückweg hielten wir an einem Café an (on the way back we stopped at a café). It implies the same or different route taken back.

On the way back we briefly got lost in the forest.
Literal Translation
