Usage Note
Waise is an orphan and is feminine regardless of the child's sex: die Waise. Do not confuse it with the homophone Weise (manner; or a wise person). The plural is Waisen, and Waisenhaus means orphanage.
Examples

Natural Translation
She became an orphan already as a small child.
