Usage Note

Buchstäblich means 'in the literal sense of the word' but is also widely used as a hyperbolic intensifier, just as English 'literally' is. Er ist buchstäblich vor Erschöpfung zusammengebrochen can mean both literal collapse and emphatic exaggeration.
