Usage Note
stammen almost always pairs with aus or von to say where someone or something comes from: Er stammt aus Bayern. It is related to der Stamm ('tree trunk, tribe, stem'), so it carries the sense of having roots somewhere. Unlike kommen aus, it stresses descent or origin rather than current travel.
