stehend is the present participle of stehen ('to stand') used as an adjective, as in stehende Gewässer ('stagnant waters') and stehender Applaus ('standing ovation'). It can mean 'stationary' or 'permanent', e.g. ein stehender Begriff. The 'st' is pronounced 'sht'.
