teuer

expensive

adjective TOY-er Less Common

Also means

dear

Usage Note

teuer means costly, but in elevated or old-fashioned speech it also means 'dear, cherished', as in mein teurer Freund. When inflected it drops the middle 'e': ein teures Auto, not teueres. The set phrase das kann teuer werden warns that something could 'get expensive' or backfire.

Examples

"Das Auto ist mir zu teuer."

Natural Translation

The car is too expensive for me.

Literal Translation

The car is to-me too expensive.
