Usage Note
Feuerwehrmann is the traditional term; the gender-neutral Feuerwehrperson or Feuerwehrkraft is increasingly used officially. Most German firefighters (ca. 80%) serve in volunteer brigades (Freiwillige Feuerwehr), while career firefighters (Berufsfeuerwehr) work in larger cities.
