Flieder (Syringa vulgaris) is the common lilac, beloved for its intensely fragrant purple or white flower clusters (Dolden) in May. Fliederzweige (lilac branches) are a classic spring gift. Note: Holunder (elderberry) is sometimes colloquially called Flieder in some German dialects.
