Usage Note

Gebot is the religious commandment, as in die Zehn Gebote (the Ten Commandments). Secularly it means an imperative or rule of conduct: das Gebot der Stunde (the need of the hour). Distinguish from Verbot (prohibition); a Gebot tells you what to do, a Verbot what not to do.
