Usage Note

Lagune refers to a shallow coastal water body separated from the open sea by a sand bar or reef — as in the Lagune von Venedig (Venice lagoon) or Pacific atolls. In German school geography it appears when studying coastal landforms and coral reef ecosystems (Korallenriff).
