Usage Note
Wacholderbeeren are dried blue-black juniper berries (Juniperus communis) used whole or crushed in Sauerbraten marinades, Sauerkraut, game dishes (Wildgerichte), and Gin. They add a resinous, piney flavour; they are sold in the spice section of all German supermarkets.
Examples
"Wacholderbeeren leicht andrücken und zur Rotkohl-Marinade geben — das rundet den Geschmack ab."
Natural Translation
Lightly crush the juniper berries and add them to the red-cabbage marinade — this rounds out the flavour.
Literal Translation
Juniper-berries lightly press-on and to the red-cabbage-marinade give — that rounds the taste off.
