externally
Usage Note
außen is the adverb for the outer surface, as in von außen ('from the outside'). It contrasts with innen ('inside') and feeds compounds like Außenseite ('outer side') and Außenpolitik ('foreign policy'). To say you go outside, German uses nach draußen, not außen.
