ausschließen is separable: the aus- breaks off in main clauses — Ich schließe das aus ('I rule that out'). Beyond barring someone from a group, it commonly means ruling out a possibility. The reflexive sich gegenseitig ausschließen means 'to be mutually exclusive'.
