Usage Note
gefallen flips English logic: the thing liked is the subject and the person is in the dative, so 'I like the film' is der Film gefällt mir (literally 'the film pleases me'). It takes haben. Don't confuse it with the homograph past participle of fallen ('fallen').
Examples
"Das Geschenk gefällt mir sehr."
Natural Translation
I really like the gift.
Literal Translation
The gift pleases me very.
