gelten describes a rule or ticket being in force, as in die Regel gilt für alle ('the rule applies to everyone'). With als it means 'to be regarded as': er gilt als zuverlässig ('he is considered reliable'). The vowel changes irregularly: gilt, galt, gegolten.
