nachfolgen in movement contexts means to follow in the footsteps of or directly behind someone: dem Führer nachfolgen (to follow the guide). It is slightly more formal than hinterherfahren or folgen, and its succession sense (jmdm. im Amt nachfolgen) is equally common.
