Usage Note
Nicht negates verbs, adjectives, and whole clauses, and usually sits near the end of the sentence or right before the word it negates. To negate a noun that has an article, German uses kein instead.

"Ich verstehe das nicht."
Natural Translation
I don't understand that.
Literal Translation
I understand that not
