Usage Note

nähern (always reflexive: sich nähern) describes gradual approach to a destination or object. It is used for vehicles (das Schiff nähert sich dem Hafen), people, weather, and deadlines. It differs from ankommen in that arrival is not yet complete.

"Das Flugzeug näherte sich dem Flughafen und begann seinen Sinkflug."

Natural Translation

The aircraft approached the airport and began its descent.

Literal Translation

The aircraft neared the airport and began its descent-flight.
