schmeicheln means to flatter someone, often with an ulterior motive. 'Er schmeichelt dem Chef' (He flatters the boss). It can also be neutral or positive — 'Das Kleid schmeichelt dir' (The dress flatters you). Context determines whether the intent is manipulative or genuinely complimentary.
