Usage Note

schweigsam describes a person who habitually says little, preferring silence to conversation. It can be respectful — ein schweigsamer Typ (a quiet type) — or hint at emotional unavailability. It is the natural opposite of gesprächig (talkative) and stronger than still (quiet).
