Usage Note
statt (also anstatt) governs the genitive, so you say statt des Autos ('instead of the car'). With an infinitive it forms statt zu ('instead of doing'), and don't confuse it with the unrelated noun die Stadt ('city'), which sounds identical.
Examples
"Wir nehmen Tee statt Kaffee."
Natural Translation
We'll have tea instead of coffee.
Literal Translation
We take tea instead-of coffee.
