Usage Note
Weswegen serves both as a relative adverb connecting a reason clause ('which is why') and as an interrogative ('for what reason'); less formal than weshalb but equally standard.

Natural Translation
He was ill, which is why he couldn't come.
Literal Translation
He was ill, because-of-which he not come could.
