zuerst means 'first' in sequence or 'at first' before a change of mind, as in zuerst dachte ich... ('at first I thought...'). It contrasts with erst, which stresses 'not until' or 'only just'. The natural follow-up is dann ('then') or zuletzt ('lastly').
