Usage Note
zählen means 'count', and the z is the hard 'ts' sound. With zu it means 'to be counted among': zu den Besten zählen ('to rank among the best'). Don't confuse it with the near-twin bezahlen ('to pay').
Examples
"Das Kind kann bis zehn zählen."
Natural Translation
The child can count to ten.
Literal Translation
The child can to ten count.
