Usage Note

überhaupt intensifies negatives, as in überhaupt nicht ('not at all') or überhaupt nichts ('nothing whatsoever'). In questions it adds a note of doubt or surprise: Bist du überhaupt sicher? ('Are you even sure?'). It can also mean 'in general' or 'on the whole'.
