Handel is largely uncountable and refers to trade or commerce in general, as in Handel treiben ('to do business'). It feeds compounds like Einzelhandel ('retail') and Großhandel ('wholesale'), and links to the verb handeln ('to act' or 'to trade'). Watch the false friend: it is not the English 'handle'.
