Handel

trade

noun HAN-del Less Common

Also means

commerce

Usage Note

Handel is largely uncountable and refers to trade or commerce in general, as in Handel treiben ('to do business'). It feeds compounds like Einzelhandel ('retail') and Großhandel ('wholesale'), and links to the verb handeln ('to act' or 'to trade'). Watch the false friend: it is not the English 'handle'.

Examples

"Der Handel mit China wächst."

Natural Translation

Trade with China is growing.
