Usage Note

Anstelle (also written an Stelle) governs the genitive and is slightly more formal than statt: anstelle des Direktors (in place of the director). Both are standard; statt is more common in everyday speech.

Examples

"Er nahm anstelle seiner Kollegin an der Konferenz teil."

Natural Translation

He attended the conference in place of his colleague.

Literal Translation

He took in-place-of his colleague at the conference part.
