evangelical

Usage Note

evangelisch in Germany usually means 'Protestant' (Lutheran), contrasting with katholisch. It is a false friend for English 'evangelical', which is evangelikal in the narrower modern sense. The state churches are named accordingly, e.g. die evangelische Kirche.
