trotz is a preposition that standardly takes the genitive: trotz des Regens ('despite the rain'). In casual speech you will hear the dative (trotz dem Regen), but the genitive is correct in writing. Do not confuse it with the noun Trotz ('defiance') or trotzdem ('nevertheless').
