Usage Note

Vermittels (also vermittelst) is a formal preposition taking the genitive, meaning 'by means of'. It is largely interchangeable with mittels but is older and more elevated in register. Rarely used outside of bureaucratic or technical texts; virtually absent from everyday speech.
