Usage Note

fünft is the ordinal stem of fünf (five) and never stands bare — it always takes an ending: der fünfte Tag ('the fifth day'). German marks ordinals in writing with a period after the digit, so '5.' reads as fünfte. The collective zu fünft means 'in a group of five'.
