grollen

to harbour resentment, to rumble (of thunder)

verb GROL-len Rare

Usage Note

grollen in the emotional sense means to nurse silent anger against someone; jmdm grollen takes the dative. It is slightly literary. Its other meaning — the rumbling of thunder — is equally common and gives the word its onomatopoeic flavour.

She bore a grudge against him for weeks without saying a word about it.

Literal Translation

She harboured-resentment him weeks-long, without a word about-it to lose.
